IPv4/IPv6 Coexistence, Phase 3
Phase 3
- The Internet core is IPv6-only
- IPv4 use is marginal, IPv4-in-IPv6 tunnels
- NAT and NAT-PT disappear
- Peer-to-peer applications are dominant
- All traffic is encrypted
- Mobile users enjoy transparent access to the network
- Networks are “plug and play” enabled
- Every point of the network is addressable and globally routable
Notes:
In the final phase IPv6 will take the position that IPv4 holds today, it will be the dominant protocol and will be used by default while IPv4 usage will become marginal. The shortcomings of IPv6 will eventually emerge and workarounds will be introduced and various protocol extensions will emerge. Users will enjoy more robust and more secure networks that will be needed to meet the demands of the more connected and more competitive future.
